Ponorogo regency is a district in East Java province, Indonesia. It is considered the birthplace of Reog Ponorogo, a traditional Indonesian dance form.      Ponorogo Regency is located in the southwestern part of the province of East Java on the border with Central Java province. It lies approximately 200 km south-west of Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java. The regency lies between 92 and 2563 meters above sea level and covers an area of about 1,305.7 km2.

Ponorogo is also known as the City of Santri because it has many boarding schools, one of which is famous is Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor located in the village of Gontor, Mlarak district.

The anniversary of Ponorogo Regency is commemorated every August 11, because on August 11, 1496, Bathara Katong was graduated / crowned as the first duke of Kadipaten Ponorogo. In 1837, Kadipaten Ponorogo moved from Kota Lama to Kota Tengah to Ponorogo District. Since 1944 until now Ponorogo regency has changed leadership as much as 16 times.

Ponorogo comes from two words namely pramana and raga. Pramana means power, the secret of life, while the body means body, body. Both words can be interpreted that behind the human body is stored a secret life (wadi) in the form of steady and steady inner mind related to the control of the properties of anger, aluwamah / lawamah, shufiah and muthmainah. Humans who have a steady and established mental ability will put themselves wherever and whenever they are. The origin of the name Ponorogo stems from an agreement in a deliberation with Raden Bathoro Katong, Kyai Mirah, Selo Aji and Joyodipo on Friday at full moon, housed in a field near a gumuk (katongan area now). In the meeting it was agreed that the city to be established was called Pramana Raga which eventually turned into Ponorogo.

B. CULTURE , FOOD & TOURISM

Culture of the famous ponorogo is REOG Ponorogo. Art of Reog is a series of dances consisting of opening dance and core dance. The opening dance is usually performed by 6-8 brave men in black, with red polished faces. Next is a dance performed by 6-8 girls riding horses. Other opening dances if there is usually a dance by a small child who brought a funny scene called Bujang Ganong or Ganongan. After the opening dance is over, a new core scene is shown which depends on the conditions in which the art of reog is displayed. If related to the marriage then the show is a romance scene. For a circumcision or circumcision celebration, usually a swordsman. The last scene is a barong lion, where the performer wears a lion-shaped head mask with a crown made of peacock feathers. But the scene in the art of reog usually does not follow a well-organized scenario. Here there is always an interaction between the player and the dalang (usually the leader of the troupe) and sometimes with the audience. Sometimes a performing player can be replaced by another player when the player is exhausted.

In addition to Reog there is also another art, the Elephants. This type of art is similar to hadroh or classic samproh, especially the musical instruments. The difference is the presence of an elephant statue. Another difference is that this art does not have a grip that keeps starting musical instruments, dance moves, songs, and musical forms change with the times.
